When did you start at Fortius?
Sports / Fitness background?
Baseball: 6-12, Golf: 8-18, Lifting weights without really knowing what I was doing: 18-29 (on and off), CrossFit: 29-30, Weightlifting 30-current.
Why the jump into Weightlifting?
I had been doing CrossFit for about 18 months, but the lifting heavy things interested me much more than the things that made me breathe hard. Also, CrossFit made me sore. Like all the time. I finally got sick of that and switched to weightlifting.
Why did you choose Fortius?
I chose Fortius because you guys were the only ones with high quality coaches running a dedicated weightlifing program in San Diego. I would have switched earlier, but Fortius didn’t exist yet
What kind of progress have you made over the past year?
Snatch: +12kg, Clean: +15kg, Front Squat: +10kg, No more shoulder pain, which I had struggled with since starting CrossFit.
Biggest misconception about Weightlifting?
I don’t think I or anyone I knew had any conceptions about actual weightlifting before I started CrossFit. I guess it would be that going to 24 hour fitness and doing bench and leg press isn’t called “weightlifting”
Favorite and Least Favorite Weightlifting movements?
Favorite: Clean. Least Favorite: Jerk
Advice for someone looking to start Weightlifting?
Don’t worry about how much you are lifting compared to everyone else; everyone has to start somewhere and these movements are very technical. Just get in and lift things and do it consistently and the progress will come.
Preparing for our wedding has interrupted my training of late. Next: Get married. After that: Get back in the gym.
What are your goals for the future?
Continue to improve on overhead movements, especially the jerk. Fix my squat (asymmetry due to baseball and golf in my younger years).
