When did you start at Fortius?

Sports / Fitness background?
Marching band and P.E. in high school. Weight machines and ellipticals in college. Learned how to squat at age 25 after reading Mark Rippetoe’s “Starting Strength” book. Officially got into weightlifting in 2011 (age 26).

Why the jump into Weightlifting?
While I was doing a generic strength training regimen, I decided to practice power cleans because the gym I was using (UCSD RIMAC) had the equipment. I realized it was fun to power clean so I decided to delve further into the other lifts. I found Coach Dave at CrossFit Invictus to help me learn the lifts and I slowly transitioned from a generic strength training program into a more specific weightlifting routine, and I realized that weightlifting is really fun. I decided to keep going.

Why did you choose Fortius?
I was already under Dave’s coaching when Fortius opened up. He moved, so I moved too. I chose to stay with Fortius of course because the training/coaching is top notch and the people are awesome.

What kind of progress have you made over the past year?
This has been more of a transition year getting down from 105kg (231 lbs.) to the 94kg (207 lbs.) weight class. In this time, however, I’ve still been able to increase my snatch from 83kg to 90kg, power snatch from 72kg to 77.5kg, power clean from 97kg to 106kg, jerk from 110kg to 121kg, clean & jerk from 110kg to 115kg, squat from 155kg to 161kg, and front squat from 135kg to 137kg. Despite the small increases in squat numbers, my bigger jumps in the other lifts are probably due to improving my technique and efficiency thanks to the coaching at Fortius. Props.

Biggest misconception about Weightlifting?
“Oh you’re a weightlifter? How much do you bench?”

Favorite and least favorite Weightlifting movements?
Favorite training lift is probably either power snatch or muscle snatch. Least favorite has got to be back squats – I complain a LOT about back squats. Favorite competition lift (obvi) is snatch.

Advice for someone looking to start Weightlifting?
Practice OFTEN. Be consistent. Don’t settle for sloppy movements. Compete regularly, even if it’s just to give your training some purpose. Dial in your nutrition as best as you can. Find a good coach. Stay over the bar.

What’s next? What are your goals for the future?
Next in store for me is to get a lot stronger at this weight class. I’m hoping to squat 175kg by the end of 2013, and I’m looking for a 100kg snatch and 125kg clean & jerk. I have a CAREER GOAL to one day qualify for the American Open, and even if for some reason that goal becomes less and less realistic, I’ll still train my butt off for as long as I’m interested in this sport, and I’m thinking that will be a long time.
